Ataturk, the great liberator of the Turks and the founder of the modern Turkish Repbulic, did everything in his power to turn Turkey to the West, including having the language transliterated from Arabic script to the Roman. He saw the danger in allowing the mullahs too much power and changed the weekend days to those of the West. Although Friday remains a holy day of sermon and important prayer, businesses are open. Banks and other offices tend to close on Saturday and Sunday just as the west does. However, the Turks are just as eager as Europeans and Americans to make money so most big stores and all little bakkals will be open every day.
