No, young kids need to get away from the class room for a little while because they do not have a long attention span.

Children are children. Children need breaks to be able to focus. You can't stick a 5-12 year old in a classroom for 8 hours uninterrupted and expect them to learn, they will burnout! Have you ever noticed that the school day is 8 hours long, with a 15 minute recess in the morning, and a 15 minute recess in the afternoon, with a 1/2 hour lunch? That's because the teachers get breaks by law as well. If there is a need for more school hours, it should be tacked on to the school day, not taken away from recess time. Not to mention, with the growing epidemic of childhood obesity, what with the influx of television-babysitters, and video games, any activity and fresh air our children get is a blessing.

No. Recess offers a chance for students to socialize. Since students are spending more time preparing for tests and doing seat work this may be the only time they are allowed to talk to each other in some schools. Recess also allows children to exercise in a fun way. Most students don't enjoy gym because they must do what they are told. When students are placed on a playground and given balls, they will run, climb, and create their own games. This allows students to learn how to become leaders while allowing them to increase their heart rate and activity level. Research proves that once the heart rate is increased, more blood goes to the brain and there is a direct correlation to the amount that can be learned. There are also benefits when students are outside at all. Many schools don't even have windows to allow natural light. Students need to get vitamin D through being in the sun not to mention breathing fresh air that isn't recirculating increases the amount of oxygen that enters the blood. Of course as cities become more polluted, this is also beginning to cause problems.

No it's part of the learning process, the children need to learn to play with children of all races and sex. It also time for daily exercise, believe it or not some children do not get any play time or outside time at home, I am a preschool teacher and have learned alot about preschool aged children in the last thirteen years. Recess is a very important part of preschool you have to remember the childrens attention span is very short.

Absolutely not! Play is an essential component of any high-quality childcare program, and perhaps even more important in the primary and intermediate grades. It provides children with opportunities to grow physically, socially, emotionally, and cognitively. Researchers have found links between children's attention in class and their social development to the amount of physical exercise they engage in each day.

Regrettably, the trend to decrease or even eliminate recess time in elementary schools has likely contributed to the growing obesity problem among the youth in the United States. Therefore, recess should be but one part of any school's total wellness policy, which should also focus on nutrition education and regular physical education. The American Academy of Pediatrics is staunchly in favor of preserving recess to help curb childhood obesity.

While the notion of keeping recess in American schools may not enjoy the universal support of all educators and school administrators, the vast majority of parents, teachers and children want to keep recess as a part of the school day.

If they want to have more behaviour problems in school... go for it. Otherwise, it is the worst idea they could have. Every school teacher and preschool teacher knows that children need exercise and the release of energy in order to be able to efficiently concentrate on "work". Preschool is all about play! It is how the children learn and is appropriately called "children's work". School-age children (and their teachers) would suffer greatly if they removed recess from schools. Behaviours would increase and learning effectiveness would decrease. Bad idea.

no, children need to have some physical daily outdoor activity. Also the schools need to be able to equal out their time with different subjects.. When teaching something like earth science they may consider doing some activities outside so that the children can get a hands on approach with what they are learning from a book. They can take what they are getting from a book and apply that to something tangible.

No, this is when your child can get fresh air. Play
with friends, develop and tone muscles. Don't forget
get some needed vitamin D on those sunny days
for bone development. Recess is also used as part
of physical activity.

No. At this age children need to be able to run and yell and have fun after they eat lunch. It gives their minds time to rest, a chance to get some fresh air and they can then concentrate on the work they have to do in the afternoon.
