I pick a line and wait. In the event that someone opens up another drawer and calls me over, for some reason they always look to the last person in line, I alert the 1 or 2 people ahead of me to get in that line as they have been waiting longer. This happens a lot at the deli too if they do not have the "take a number" thing going on. It's usually some impatient person just pushing their way in. In that case, I have said "I believe I've been waiting longer" or "I was next".
I agree with the person who mentioned not to sweat the small stuff. I was in Atlanta at a busy business convention shortly after the Asian Tsunami hit and there were always lines for the elevators or you would have to wait along time to even see one. Some people would get really frustrated and groan & complain and a few got irate. I remember thinking that my inconveneinces here are NOTHING compared to what those people had to deal with. Don't sweat the small stuff and always maintain your own sense of dignaty. If someone has been waiting longer than you, let them go first when a new line forms and be proud that you, even if no one else is, are a polite and courtious person. But don't let yourself get walked all over. Stand up for yourself when needed but pick your battles. Sometimes it may not be worth your time.

It is sort of up to the teller to say "Next In Line".
Most times if there are 2 registers open and no one else in line, go up to the next available. Why wait?
Sometimes it happens where people DO start a line, when most times it isn't a single line. I have asked as well, is this a single line? It can get frustrating, but if you keep in mind when you are in line you will be there for about 10 min. you won't get upset. If someone DOES jump in line in front and they take them, then it wasn't a single line and I would say something to the cashier like, why didn't you take the next in line (or something like that.) And of course sometimes people DO say something to the person as well. Hope this helps.

I agree with you and it seems some stores understand what you describe and create queing lines that accomodate your approach and lend for efficiencies.
But, in the instances where you have to choose a line, it usually turns out that you've made a bad choice. Seems to me that this happens more often than not.
As for the person who jumps in when you are attempting to go for a one line approach, either they didn't get it or are greedy and don't care. I hate to think it's the second but it seems that happens a lot. As when a new cashier opens and everyone behind you rushes over to beat each other to be first. Aggghhh.

Just pick one and live with your decision. You've already been shopping for an hour or whatever, so what's 5 minutes more going to do to you? It's like people go insane if they can't park close to the door at the mall. You're going to be walking the entire mall property and the last 100 feet to your car is going to kill you? There are much bigger things in the world to stress out over. The check out and a parking space are not among them.

I stand between them. If someone jumps in I may or may not comment that there is a line for a reason, depending on the person and my mood. You know, if it's a 350 lb guy in leather with piercings and tattoos I'll probably let it go.

I would watch both of them and if they are just typing a lot of times I just walk right up to them and then they tell me if they are open or not....I am like a kid I was there first...its sad cuz I feel like the other people behind me wont wait their turn so I have to hurry up and get there first...when in fact I really just want to take my time and wait til a teller calls me :)

It depends on how the check-out area is set up. I agree with you- the fair way is to stand in one big line and take the next available lane. Most stores unfortunately have individual lines for individual lanes, so in those you should pick a lane.

I look at how much is left to be checked out & pick the one with the least items. I got too crazy waiting in the middle & then have someone would jump in front of me lol.

Depends. If there is a line and everyone is just going to what ever one opens first, I just stay in the line and wait for the earliest to open. However, new comers who start their own line disrupt this so it can be like a balancing act.

stand in line and don't sweat the small stuff.
I always look at situations like this. If I were in a wheelchair I would give anything to stand in line. Blind I would give anything to see the line up. Poor and hungry? Give anything to be able to afford the food.
Be glad you can do that, don't drive yourself 'nuts that you have to wait one full minute.
