The shelter has a rule that in needs to be neutered. I'm afraid that neutering him will traumatize an adult dog and change his personality.
Any suggestions are welcome.

This neutering thing is out of your hands. I doubt that they will let you have the dog with this procedure being done. If this is unacceptable to you, then you will just have to find another Akita.

I adopted a 3 year old Akita from a shelter 7 years ago. He too had to be neutered. While he did seem to resent me a bit for a week or so (he used to stare at his crotch, then at me, then back again and so forth...lol) he ended up being the most loyal and faithful dog I've ever had (in fact, he saved my life!). Neutering a mature dog doesn't affect their personality that much, it will keep him from marking (you'll like that) and it keeps him from chasing/dominating female dogs a bit. I say don't worry, get it done and help that wonderful dog out by getting him outta that shelter. He'll love you for it (after a week...lol).

Neutering will not traumatize an adult dog. All dogs who are not of breeding quality, should be spayed/neutered as it greatly lessens the chances of them developing cancer. Also licensing fees are less, the dog should be less aggressive. There are no bad side effects.

Good luck with your akita!

Neutering him will not "tramatize" this dog at all.
If anything it will keep him from straying away to find a woman friend & getting lost or hit by a car ect.
Also it will calm his temperment down, make him a little bit more laid back.. & keep him from wanting to pee on every tree, shrub, corner he comes across.
Unneutered male dogs love to mark their territory.. ya don't want him doing that in your house..
Akita's are beautiful big loveable dogs..
I wish you lots of luck & happiness with yer' new family member.
God Bless

MYTH: I don't want my male dog or cat to feel like less of a male.

FACT: Pets don't have any concept of sexual identity or ego. Neutering will not change a pet's basic personality. He doesn't suffer any kind of emotional reaction or identity crisis when neutered.

nah, if anyhting it makes them more docile, but this breed needs lots of energy or it will terrorize the house it lives in. Also when a male dog is neutered it squats to pee instead of lifting the leg on your sofa!!!

He'll be fine.
Plus, if that's their rule, he'll either be neutered and end up with you, or be neutered and end up with someone else. If you can give him a good home he'll be happy.
Do it.
