Prostitution is a profession like any other. What has to be done about it is reasonable orgnization with protections of the rights of all participants: the customers (they must receive what has been promised to them) as well as of the prostitutes themselves. Necessary attention should be given to the safety regulations, prevention of transmissible disease etc. Certainly, prostitutes must be registered as entrepreneurs and pay taxes. On the other hand, the souteneurs are in fact damaging for normal business, apropriating a great deal of income that should belong to the prostitutes. Prostittion is organized rationally, for example, in the Netherlands.

Hard prison time and counseling while they are there, along with life skills classes.
I have a relative who was a crackhead and a prostitute to support the crack habit. After many years of this lifestyle, she ended up doing hard time in prison for another crime.
Today, she is clean from crack and has a very respectable job.
Prison can be a good thing. Many women become prostitutes because they think so little of themselves (often due to a history of sexual or other abuse) and/or because they feel trapped.

Honestly, I don't think there should be a penalty for it. The Pimps are the real law breakers. Some prostitutes have no choice and the ones that do, do it willingly so who's to say what they can and cannot do to their own bodies. If people are dumb enough to pay for it & do it, oh well.

I think that humiliation is a great way of punishment. But I think that having to wear a sandwich board out in public would be better with what crime they have committed on it. I think that this would also work great with teenagers. With things written on it like "I like to pick on little kids" or "I cheat on tests" i think you get the point. But I do agree our punishments do not seem to do the job anymore.

How about taxation and decriminalization with licensing requiring mandatory disease testing and medical check-ups? This would nearly eliminate the criminal aspect which makes the profession dangerous; while eliminating what is nothing more than a prohibition on consensual sex.

I don't think that would bother them for some reason. Isn't that what they're used to? I don't know how they can really say it's illegal anyway, except for the fact that hookers don't have to pay taxes.

since prostitution is between two consenting adults, it should be legal. Who the ***** are you to dictate someone else's life to him/her?
Pull your head out of your pompous, self richeous as-s.
