You are right, branwen. A peaceful being need not be a Christian. But Since Bible is the definitive scripture where it is written in so many words, I just happened to ask the q to Christians. Apologies.

i am not a christian but i have a true story about this from my own experience
when i was younger my friends and i were on a kind of treasure hunt
i found the prize and my friend got jealous and wanted it ... so she started attacking me
i can take a lot and i decided just to let her go ahead ... so she slapped my face .. and again .. and again .. and i wouldn't retaliate or cry
she ended up in such a rage she ran crying and looked incredibly stupid
i walked away with my head held high and the prize i found lol

Knowing it's the right thing to do... And being humble and in control enough to do it are two different things. No one is perfect and we all fall short of the glory of God. Christians are people too... Your belief in Jesus doesn't make you a super human. We still get mad, sad, jealous, and loose control sometimes.... It's all about learning how to control yourself and act in a manner that would please God. It's not about being perfect all the time.

I'm not sure if you're actually talking about someone physically hitting, or if it's some some kind of metaphor, but if some one hit me, I'd kick their butt. If that makes me less of a Christian, then okay!

if someone hit me i'd take that as an act of aggression and respond with three times the force.

don't start something if you can't finish it.

and i'm not a christian, i don't want to be at the mercy of my enemies.

That is what Jesus said we are supposed to do. It is one of the hardest things to do isnt it? That and to love your enemies and do good to them. I try to. But I'm only human and feel like smacking back sometimes...
