I woke up this morning, earlier than usual, and happened to catch a show where they talked about the Blessing of Abraham. They talked about it, but didn't explain it.

Abraham is our father in faith.

When God blessed Abraham he made a number of promises to him, only some of which were fulfilled in Abraham's lifetime.

The most important promise, the one that united all Abrahams children, tribes, and nations, was Christ's redemptive death on the cross, and the universal church which Jesus subsequently established on the earth for all men.

The church is the "Holy Nation" that fulfilled all of God's promises to Abraham, and to his people.

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen generation, a kingly priesthood, a holy nation, a purchased people: that you may declare his virtues, who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:
1Pe 2:10 Who in times past were not a people: but are now the people of God. Who had not obtained mercy: but now have obtained mercy.

It is basically about inheritance. Be it physical or spiritual. Inheritance of land promised to Abraham. Inheritance of God's blessing which would be eternal life with God through Christ. Promise of many Children....many nations.
Abraham was approx. 80+ when he had his first son "Ismael" and 100 when he had his second son "Isaac". Abraham had his first son at the bidding of his wife to use her handmaid as a surrogate mother, but was not ordained of God. His second son was supposed to be his first son and was chosen because Isaac came through Sarah, his wife..... she was 90 years old when she gave birth to Isaac. So one can see that this in its self was a blessing too.

But I think that the biggest thing about Abraham was "FAITH". The blessing of Abraham is that through faith, we are to receive that was promised to Abraham....favor in God's eyes and life eternal. I hope I explained this correctly.

God bless those that calls upon him for wisdom, knowledge and understanding.

I believe this is when God told him he would be the father of a great nation. (remember he was childless) His decedents would be as numerous as the grains of the sand. In Old Testament days, it was a blessing to have many children. Look around Genesis chapter 17.
