There's a good deal of research going on right now. Many old wives' tales work for a few people. Nothing works for everybody. Prevention, though, is better than cure -- and that includes never drinking without food. The BBC link below has as good a list of things as any I've seen: water, air, paracetamol, sleep...

I'm 49 and have had very few hangovers in my life. I started drinking around 15 (beer). I made a ritual of taking 2 aspirins (usually generic 250 mg) when I arrived home for the night/day. I keep grapefruit juice on hand and drink it instead of soda. Read it detoxifies your system of alcohol. If I forgot to take the aspirin and got up with a hangover I will take a shower and sip on a glass of tap/bottled water, not cold and don't gulp, the shaky feeling and queasiness will let-up. As far as any food, eat what you want when you feel like it.

A good quality B-complex multi-vitamin will have you feeling a whole lot better in about 20 minutes. Your body needs the vitamin B replaced. The coffee is a bad idea, it will further dehydrate you. The sore head bit is caused by a dehydrated brain. Water won't seem so intolerable after the vitamins kick in.
A toasted ham, cheese tomato sandwich after that is always a good idea to follow, butter on the outside as well, of course.

Sounds nasty, but the cure I use is about 2 to 3 litres of warm water, with about a tablespoon of sugar, and a little bit of salt in it (per half litre). Drink that much within about 15 minutes and you'll soon feel better (It will certainly kill the headache, but if you throw up a lot when hungover, you need something solid - would suggest dry toast or similar)

Dry to obtain a spicy seafood soup. Add lots of lemon and hot sauce. One large bowl should do the trick. Make sure it is spicy enough to make your nose run. Avoid greasy foods, that can make you queasy. Before you eat, try a hot shower, followed by extremely cold spray before you exit. then stretch as much as possible and get a rub down too. Drink liquids.
Avoid sugary drinks next time you drink. Drink clear liquors with clear mixers. The better brands of liquor will give you less of a hangover.

Hair of the dog works for me or a good greasy fry up. I read in a magazine that this works. just mix together...........
2 peaches
1 cup of milk
2.5cm ginger, peeled or chopped
1 teaspoon of honey
Why it works: one of the quickest ways to cure a hangover is by rehydrating the body and replacing nutrients.Milk gives energy and calms upset tummy. The protein will help your liver flush out alcohol. Ginger quells nausea and boosts circulation, which will stop headaches. Honey is used to harmonise the liver, neutralise toxins and relieve pain

ok first you need to get a full english breakfast down you, then you need to rehydrate.. A hangover is caused by a drop in the water levels in the head. this means that the brain is not suspended at the appropriate level and as such it can rub on the inside of the skull thus giving you a headache.. once these levels are returned to normal then your hangover will subside..
Good Luck, I hate hangovers

A.A ....I remember when I used to drink my life is so happy now that I dont. no more hangovers. and the hangovers get worse and worse. BUT since you must... go to the health food store and buy mega B vitimins.. must be Mega B's . take them while you are drinking. part of the hangover is the B vitimin depletion while drinking. I remember handing them out to my drinking buddies while we drank and the next day they told me it really worked or some said it greatly diminished the hangover. another part of the hangover is dehydration . so drink alot of water , and take a spoonful of honey. that also works because another part of the hangover is hypoglycemia. the honey or something sweet will instantly perk you up and take away that mental sick feeling.. so there you go ,,, and i will pray that one day you will quit...... jennie

I never get a hangover. Why???
Because I drink XO cognac instead of VSOP.
Because I drink 21 years aged whisky instead on the 12 years.
Because I drink 100% natural absinthe instead of those with artificial flavorings or colors.
Because I drink anejo tequila instead of reposado.
It works for me!!!!!!!! Don't know about you.
Good Luck.
