I hope to retire in a few years and I would like to travel the US in an RV with two dogs. The main problem is that one of them is a pitt bull, which are illegal in some places. He's very sweet, has always been a house pet. How can I find out before I go somewhere if we will be welcome?

Definitely call ahead, preferably to the township that you will be visiting, as local laws are so different everywhere. If you're staying at a campground, you'll want to check with them, too.

Something you could also think about that may help to convince some places that BOTH your dogs are good pooches is to take them thru the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test. It's not an official title, but it's not expensive to do and it also shows people that you've put some effort into making sure your dogs are well behaved, no matter what the breed. There are even some insurance companies that "ban" owners with certain breeds that will make exceptions if the dog has the CGC certificate.

List down the states you intend to pass thru and if they allow pitbulls. Maybe get a good leash as well so that the dogs won't be jumping out and run wild the minute you stop. Also, find out if you need papers for the dogs. Good luck and have fun.

Some camp-grounds we've discovered do not allow pets at all.Your best bet would be to call ahead to make sure the one you're planning on spending time at does.I'm sure if you contact the state police of any state they'll tell you if the breed is banned.
