It all dates back to the Union of the Crowns 1603 and the Act of Parliament 1707 whereby Scotland was given certain guarantees to ensure that Scotland was not swallowed by England. For example Scotland retains her own legal system, her own education system and under the agreement the Church of Scotland was kept separate. Interestingly enough, the Queen is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England but does not have such a standing in the Church of Scotland; as well as the Anglican Church of Wales and the Anglican Church of Ireland.

The Church of Scotland was also shaped due to the Scottish Reformation of 1560 when it broke off all allegiances with the Vatican (and the Roman Catholic Church). This is decidedly different to the path followed by the Church of England. The Church of Scotland is a Presbyterian Church influenced (as mentioned above by the Scottish Reformation) and by a man called John Knox. The Church of England is Anglican and only disestablished from Rome as Henry VIII of England would not be granted a divorce.

The Church of England is part of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It was originally part of the Catholic Church but split away when Henry VIII nationalised it. The Anglican Church in Scotland in called the Episcopal Church of Scotland.

The Church of Scotland is based upon Calvin's teachings and has very different beliefs.

They are cousins....both products of the Reformation and Anglican in nature.

The Anglican Church, or Church of England is the result of King Henry VIII wanting to divorce his wife and marry the woman he was having his adulterous affair with, but the Church of Rome would not allow. That's a history to proud of, eh?
