He was both. Message runners in the trenches had the shortest life expectancy - he was a soldier first and a message runner second.
He did get various medals and a promotion to corporal by the end of the war.

plenty of courier got shot and blown to bits and certainly saw others that were not to mention stacks of dead rotting body's everywhere could that drive someone crazy enough to think he could take over the world my grand father was a courier for the USA in ww1 he never would talk about it of course i was a child not something you tell a kid

He was a runner in a infantry unit.Going back and forth from the unit CP to the front.He went where the infantry went.

HI,,, hmmm,,,, i dont know about a courier,,, i do know that he was gassed somewhere,, and spent time at a hospital....
He made corporal and that was about it...

I'm old but I do remember something about him being a swill eating beast who liked to paint and wasn't very good at it cuz it weren't acceptable.

i thnk you will find that he was a corpral in the german army. He then got injured in some way which forced him out of the war

This is true, but (at least for his own safety) he was probably trained to fire if necessary.
