You surely are looking for free, effective and not a system-hog antivirus program. But it is a bad idea to run two (or more) programs on the background at the same time. Launch your TASK MANAGER and check the Processes tab to see what I mean.

What I recommend for a stable and virus/spyware-free system is to install the following tandem:

eTrust Antivirus (free 1-year license, def-files autoupdated)

-and-
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Professional (not Personal) with Ad-Watch
http://www.lavasoft.com

If you download Avast and AVG, they get downloaded.
If you install them, they get installed.

It is not recommended to have two anti-virus software active on one system. So you use either one.
