This is too broad a question to answer accurately, because there are many different "types" of rockclimbing.

There is 'trad' climbing, where equipment used to protect the leader is removed afterwards and does not damage the rock.

There's 'sport' climbing where the equipment to protect the leader is in the form of permanent bolts which have been drilled into the rock by someone just for that purpose.

There is 'aid' climbing where pretty-much anything goes and the climber doesn't necessarily do much 'climbing', but rather uses equipment to aid his/her ascent.

There is mountaineering where a mixture of everything is used and there may be 'fixed ropes' on the ascent which are permanent ropes used to aid ascent.

That is a brief and not fully comprehensive breakdown of different forms of rockclimbing and hopefully gives an impression of why this is not a simple question to answer.

There are grading systems but the grades for climbs do change and are decided from general consensus (hence they can change). The hardest rockclimb in the world is also largely a matter of opinion since different climbers are suited to different styles of climbing and movement, rocktype etc etc. So, hypothetically speaking, if you got all the 'best' climbers in the world together in one room, who had all climbed all of the 'hardest' rockclimbs in the world, there would still be no clear answer.

Hope that helps.

The Great Trango Tower (also know as the Nameless Tower) that lies on the Boltoro Glacier in the Karakoram mountain range of Pakistan. It captures the imagination of rock climbers around the world.

Overall, the Trango Towers group has seen some of the most difficult and significant climbs ever accomplished, due to the combination of altitude, total height of the routes, and the steepness of the rock. All of the routes are highly technical climbs. Great Trango is rather a large peak with three main summits, all over 6000 meters.

It wasn't until 1975 that the area opened for climbing after being closed for many years and Nameless Tower was ascended for the first time by a strong British team. The British team that comprise of Joe Brown, Martin Boysen, Mo Anthoine and Malcolm Howells successfully climbed the needle-like feature by its southwest face in 1976.

Great Trango Tower's main summit (6286 m) was first climbed in 1977 by Galen Rowell, John Roskelly, Kim Schmitz, and Dennis Hennek by the easiest route up the western side.

Not until 1987 did Nameless Tower see its second ascent by a new route by a Yugoslav team.

Trango now has eight different routes to the summit. And the number of successful. To date few expedition or should I say rock climbers has ascended the Trango Tower successfully.
