A soulmate is someone that you have spent much of a lifetime with. You only know who your soulmates are (or were) by remembering shared experiences over the years. You will never be able to tell whether someone else is your soulmate by trying to judge your relationship with him at the moment.
Probably a lot of divorces happened because two people thought that they had to feel "a deep spiritual connection" with each other and didn't. Those connections are organic things; that is, they grow over time. Only lust and infatuations come ready-made.

A soulmate doesn't need to be a person, it can be anything, the sea, a field, your car, your house, a church, anything. As long as you feel comfortable being with something or someone, where you can be most relaxed, it can be counted as a soulmate. U might be even deeply emotionally attached to it.

Mate signifies a companion. You have several types Eg classmate, Teammate, life-mate and so on. Companionship implies some amount of integration of partners in terms of understanding each others strength and weakness and making adjustments/ sacrifices to achieve the purpose of their association as also enjoy each others company. Integration of a couple after marriage is more complete after sexual union and cohabitation for a long time. But to call someone soul-mate is to take the level of integration to such heightened levels that it is physically impossible in this real world and may be possible only when partners are no more since soul is something too difficult to realize, feel or practically experience for a living individual.

Soulmate (or soul mate) is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep affinity, friendship, love, strong intimacy, sexuality, or compatibility.
A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul - thought to be the ultimate soulmate, the one and only other half of one's soul, for which all souls are driven to find and join.
However, not everyone who uses these terms intends them to carry such mystical connotations; they are sometimes used simply as an expression of strong emotional feeling for someone.

I think it's a bond you have with someone...
I've got a uote that's not so related:
true love is a consistant good attitude towards life and it respects it's creatures. It doesn't let feelings dominate its reasoning. In my belief, our god is superior lest anyone make themselves superior in a relationship. If it's not a god, let it be something else we share, like goals or something. Friendship is the best way to keep a relationship strong. Love can also make you enemies feel remorse. Saying yo love someone is worthless if you don't prove it with your attitude.
Issn't that cool?....oh wait, love doesn't boast either...LOL

It's a fictional individual that would be your "perfect" match in every way.
It is a hope for those who believe that every person has a special person that only they should be with.
OR it could just mean a current partner with whom you feel comfortable with and share everything.

A person that you feel a deep, spiritual connection with. It's like you've known them forever, but you just met them a day, a week, a month, a year ago.
