Beta software is basically a near-final test version. If you're beta testing software, part of the purpose is to find bugs and things that need tweaking (the software makers usually welcome input on betas). The companies will tell you up front they're not final versions, and may well have glitches, but my general experience is that they usually work fairly well (though lately it seems, with the new Microsoft Office and Media Player betas, and even the Yahoo Messenger beta, I prefer the old versions a bit more).

Generally Beta release is an official release with no warranty. This release is for real life (field) testing in order to find out more and more bugs.
This practice is generally followed for the products, where field testing is important before the final release.
Generally beta release contains all the features which the final release is going to have, the only difference between beta and final release is the quality of the product
