You will have to first contact the nearest US embassy. They will provide you with papers to fill out, but you may not get an interview for several years depending on your educational background. If you have a skill that is sought after in the US, you will be processed much more quickly. If you come from a European country, you will be processed faster than if you come from China, say. That's because there are about .5 million applicants in China and many fewer than that in each European country.

Good luck.

David, please tell me more about the diversity ship for Africans. I know a lot of Africans who would like to immigrate to the US. I didn't know it was so easy. This diversity ship and payment program is kept deep under wraps, apparently. Surprising that the people it is meant to help are kept in ignorance of it. How do you know about it?

Also, please tell me the secret for getting a spouse visa rapidly. I don't know anyone who has found that to be the case, including me and my husband.

You can try your luck with the green card lottery, which I think is held once every year. However, there are countries whose citizens are ineligible to join the green card lottery. Other means of getting to the US would be to have a valid job offer from a US-based company, which would mean a working visa, good for three to five years and renewable. Visiting the website of the US State Department's Bureau of Consular Affairs might be of help to you. The link is http://travel.state.gov.

If you're a Mexican, the usual procedure is to sneak over, buy forged documents, and wait for the next Amnesty.

If you're a Jew in East Europe, go to the US Consulate and get a visa, which, once you're in the USA, you'll find yourself on the easy road to a green card. Influence, you know.

If you're African, get on the next American diversity ship. The government will give you a place to stay at our expense! And, if they don't give you enough, you can start a riot and they'll give you more!

If you're White, however, you're out of luck, unless you can pretend to be a Mexican. Pinch your nose shut and practice saying "Si senor."
