Firstly I think you did leave it too late, but the solution is to wash the carpet with a soapy liquid, that has no ammonia in it as this will let it smell even worse, use a very good carpet shampoo, and this you are going to have to do at least once a week, but don't drench the carpet, when you are finished while the carpet is damp sprinkle some pepper on it and lay newspaper over it so that it can soak up the remaining water, but air the room on a daily basis and what you can also do is sprinkle carpet powder on when completely. If this does not work your only other solution is to replace the carpet, sorry but that is one smell you are going to struggle to get rid of but I am sure this remedy will alleviate it a tad

Get a can of Spot Shot and try it. My cats hack up hairballs every once and awhile and sometimes they eat to much and upchuck the food. I'm not always around when it happens but even if it has dried out that Spot Shot really does a fantastic job of cleaning it up. Of course you have to know the exact spot where your cat peed so you are sure you are spraying the cleaner on it. After you have done that sprinkle some baking soda on it too. I have a cat that used to have "accidents" on the carpet so I started feeding her cat food specifically blended for urinary tract health. That really made the difference.

You need to use a special cleaner that contains an enzyme that will neutralize the smell. You can usually get these cleaners from a pet shop or vet clinic.
It is pretty much the ONLY thing that will actually break down and get rid of the smell.

Unfortunately, I think you've left it too late. It has actually dried into the underlay. When it's fresh, you mop up as much as you can with a paper towel then pour bi-carb soda on it quite thick and let it sit for about 3 days, then vacuum it off. Sorry! lots and lots of carpet freshener....
