I deleted the linux partition in my dual boot system and then used fixmbr in recovery console but now my system says 'no boot filename recieved' on booting up

Since you deleted Linux Partition, your primary partition's Boot record was affected.

Simply put the XP CD-ROM, Boot from it, re-install XP on existing XP (Do an Upgrade).

use fix MBR X: (or perhaps fix mbr X:\)
for fixing the MBR to your Xdrive
Then enter the bios setup and look for the entry "BOOT FROM OTHER LOCATIONS" and enable it then save changes and exit.

Have you tried 'fixboot' in recovery console?
