the only bullmastiff I ever met was the soppiest dog ever and let little babies crawl all over her and spent all day sleeping, I think dobermans and alsatians are bred for guard dogs

Bull mastiff is a great dog, however, from personal experience, their life expectancy is only 6-8 yrs at most. They have hip problems and other tumor type problems. Many other large breed dogs are great family dogs and also make wonderful guard dogs. Obedience training is the key. Good luck.

Brenda D's info is right on! They do have more than their share of problems. That being said, there is no better guard/companion for the family. The oldest age reached by one of our Bullmastiffs was 14 years... the shortest, 5 years.
You can breed large ones, smaller ones, reds, fawns, and brindles, but you can't breed out their guarding instinct.

I believe that any dog can be a reliable guard dog, however it is all about the way you treat your dog and the respect you show it. Also please do dog training.
