sometimes called Chinese Valentine's Day, falls on the seventh day of lunar month seven of the Chinese calendar and thus its name. It is traditional for young girls to demonstrate their domestic arts on this day (especially melon carving) and to make wishes for a good husband.

The Ghost Festival is a traditional Chinese festival and holiday, which is celebrated by Chinese in many countries. In the Chinese calendar (a lunisolar calendar), the Ghost Festival is on the fourteenth night of the 7th lunar month.

In the Chinese tradition, the 7th month in the Chinese calendar is called the Ghost Month, in which ghosts and spirits come out from the lower world to visit earth. The Ghost Festival is the climax of a series of the Ghost Month celebrations. Activities at the festival include preparing ritualistic offering food, and burning hell money to please the visiting ghosts and spirits as well as deities and ancestors. Other activities include burying and releasing miniature paper boats and lanterns on water, which signifies "giving directions to the lost ghosts". A very solemn festival, the festival nevertheless represents a connection between the living and the dead, earth and heaven as well as body and soul.

The Ghost Festival shares some similarities with the predominantly Mexican observance of El Día de los Muertos.

It is the Hungry Ghost's Festival which most Chinese people believe and observe. this is the time when the gates of Hell open and the ghosts or spirits are released into the world for a chinese calendar month.

Believers and superstitious people present food/sweets/snacks on the altars and burn joss sticks/paper to "feed" the hungry ghosts that were released into the world. they are hungry because they aren't allowed anything to eat when they were in Hell.

This year is a special year because there are two "7th months", this means that the hungry ghost's festival will run for 2 consecutive chinese calendar months. this is in accordance to the chinese lunar calendar.

the 2nd month of the 7th month is called 闰七月 (run qi yue).
