Bleaching is a process that "strips" the natural components (proteins, keratin, etc) of your hair, evidently lighten it to a lighter color. Hair color is scaled from 0 - 12, with 0 being the lightest color (Platinum Blonde - White) and 12 being the darkest color (Black - Jet black).
To go from a 12 to a level 0, requires a lot of bleaching. Hair lightening power will bring black hair to a bronzy orange color (8). You will have to bleach it multiple times to get it to a lighter and lighter color. Doing so will severely damage your hair, scalp, and dermis. Sensitive individual will experience inflammation and burn. The process of "stripping" the proteins out of your hair will cause your hair to break into little pieces, not just the painful inflammation alone. If you want to lighten your hair you will have to accept the pain and go through it with much courage, usually beauty / hair salon will not do this request on customer, or if they do you may be ask to sign a release of liability form.
To make the color look "naturally blonde" you will need to apply hair toner to even out the shade of the color as well. Mix it with a level 30 developer, or a 20 for best result, and when bleaching your hair with a hair lightening power, use a 40 developer for maximum lift.
When I did this, I had to bleach my hair 3 - 4 times to get it to a blonde, which was stakingly painful, but I have had much experience with dyeing hair colors since middle school, I advise that you take precaution, because it can also cause blindness (if get in the eye) or may even be cancerous if you don't use proper care and protection. Good luck.

It only hurts if you have sensitive skin or any wounds on your scalp. The only reason darker hair would be an issue is because it takes longer to get it to blonde.

You can't see it in my pic, but I was a puny, long haired punk. I had almost every color. My scalp would burn if I bleached too long or used a bad product. I am a Clairol person. I think my hair coloring was a teenage rebelion, but I do not exclude doing it again. But if I did, I'll always use Clairol.

I bleached my hair to a very light blonde shade ... and yeah, it burned a little. Then again I did this on my own, and i had just started experimenting with hairdye. Oh, to note: my original haircolor, and color at the time of bleach, was black.

Well I am sure that it isn't necessarily because your hair is naturally darker that is can cause pain, it's probably because everyone is different, some people have more of a sensitive scalp, which can cause the dye to burn, itch and become rather pain-full and annoying.
This dosen't include the awfull smell! lol. Thats rather painfull in itself!

If it touches your scalp it may. I have black hair and one time I went to platinum blonde. The first hour is searing pain, but it gets kind of numb after a while. Then the first time you take a shower is searing pain.

The only way it would hurt is if you got a chemical burn. Which would be brought out by someone who doesnt know what they are doing when they bleach their hair.

I never had any problem with it, but if the solution is too strong it could burn your skin. Also, we all have different pain tolerances so what doesn't hurt on one person may hurt on another. The fumes really bother some people too.

The smell burns my eyes alil bit.
I'd highly advise not bleaching. It damages your hair, BAD. It'll ruin it for at least an entire year. Condition, condition, condition!

If your hair is dark then go to a pro. You could end up with orange and red hair.
