Cats penis's have barbs on them to help the female cat to ovulate (beleive it or not) The act of sex is quite painful for the female cat as a result. When they mate you will hear them howl, and at the point the male withdraws the female will more than likely attack the male....
...I don't know why I know that, but hey, I just do.....maybe it was all those childrens nature documentaries I watched as a kid.

Because they need to get into a small space. They are also "barbed"!!!!! They have little spikey projections that point to the back of the penis. When they pull out of the female, it causes pain and that is what induces the female to ovulate.
