He may have fleas. My cat dude has a terrible time with fleas and the first thing that he starts doing, is pulling at his belly fur. He was miserable, but since that incident I always make sure he is groomed and has his advantage. This may not be your cat's problem, but since it's been so hot, that maybe something to consider. I'd consult your vet, because something is irritating your cat's skin and he will naw himself raw which is not good.

2 likely causes:
1. could have a skin irritation, such as fleas, dermatitis, etc. Take to vet to get this looked at. If no skin problem, then it could be:

2. You cat could be "stress grooming". Cats groom to calm themselves as well as to clean themselves. If they are bored, if a new pet has come into the house, if there have been any significant changes in its environment (even seeing a strange dog or cat out the window on a regular basis), you cat may over groom and area until it becomes bald.

My cat did the same thing and the vet gave me a solution to bath her in. She had a nervous condition that caused her to groom too much and this gave her an infection of the skin.

could be anything... Fleas, hair is matted and he/she is trying to fix it, or nervous habit? You might need to take them to the vet and get that checked out... It might be more than what your thinking... It's better to be safe than sorry... thanks for the two points

I think he is feeling stressed. Excessive grooming is a sign of stress.
