Take a cab to Universal studios in Burbank, you can get the Metro (red line) from there which will take you right down to Hollywood right at the Mann's Chinese area.
Do not take a cab all the way to Hollywood! - it will cost a fortune. Universal City where the Universal Studios rides are is right next door to Burbank. Much shorter and cheaper cab ride.
While in Burbank you should walk/drive around by the studios - Warner Bros. and Disney have great lots even from the outside, and NBC studios is right there too. Your cab may go past them depending on where you are in Burbank.
After walking around in Hollywood sightseeing for a bit, pop into the Roosevelt Hotel for a drink and take in the site of the first Academy Awards. It's right across from Manns.

Unfortunatley, Taxi. No bus I know of. Go down LaBrea, aout 8 miles. Fare, $40.00. $80.00? Well, your on vacation.
Once in Hollywood, you can take the LA Metro, the red, Blue or Gold Line Light Rail all over. Leave early Thursday, and have a blast.
