I have also experienced this problem. Which puzzled me too. I have always thought part of the reason is because I am sleeping too long. For me 9 hrs and over sleep is too much. I also believe very much that being dehydrated initially contributes to this as your body is craving liquid desperately. I also realised that I was susceptible to the excess electrical wattage coming from my bedside clock/radio. Apparently all electrical appliances emit extra electrical energy around them. This does not have a positive effect on us. I purchased an item called a Purple Plate which eliminates this excess when placed underneath the electrical device. I have slept with virtually no headaches since this. (The reason I really was convinced that the clock/radio had something to do with my headaches was because I alway found myself waking up on the far opposite side from the clock/radio position every morning. Now I would add that all my life and even now I am a still sleeper.....I do not move once asleep. So I took it too mean that in my unconscious state I was trying to get as far away from the appliance as possible. I also make a concerted effort to drink at the very least a litre of water a day (two litres is the ideal). The other thing which I believe contributes to the headaches is by having high blood pressure. I have since learned that being dehydrated contributes to this state (learnt that from a doctor).
.
Anyway I now do not suffer from this problem so I hope that my experiences my lead you to determine what your problem is. Of course if this is sudden and unexpected you probably should get the advice of a good doctor.
.
All the best.

Try drinking some water (preferably not a ton right before bed, because that just makes you need to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Try like 1 or 2 glasses at most right before bed).
Another guess is the way you sleep. If you sleep in such a way that your neck is kind of bent (such as sleeping on 2 or more pillows), then your neck muscles get kind of stretched (in a bad way) and when you wake up, it hurts.

Assuming your headaches are not the result of a hangover, then the most likely culprit is one of two things. The first is caffiene addiction. Coffee is quite addictive; you may be experiencing withdrawal.
The other possibility is low blood sugar. In other words, your body is hungry and wants you to get out of bed and make some breakfast.

Not drinking enough water the day before gives me a really bad one when I wake up. I try to drink as much as I can before I fall asleep if I know I ahven't drunk much (or if I've drunk too much wine!) during the day and I keep a water bottle by my bed to swig on if I wake up in the night and first thing in the am.
For you, it might be more serious tho...good luck

it could be coming from your neck. if you're sleeping not in a very comfortable pose. and your neck is placed on your pillow in some incoret way .. then the pain from your neck goes to your head and here you go.. a morning headache (try getting a better matrace)

sleep apnia is possible, but is sounds more like oxygen deprived, if you have gas burning appliance (water heater) you could have a carbon manoxide problem meaning the vent may be clogged and low oxygen in room as the exhaust is filling your house/room.
If you have gas appliance, you should have a detector in your house, there just like smoke detectors but they monitor co2 vrs oxygen levels and not that expensive.
If it is Sleep Apnia... you stop breathing at night and become oxygen deprived till you start breathing... thus the headach... please check into both these as you do have a problem that is giving your clearning warning signs..... something is wrong.

I used to have it when I take a nap (but mine is in the afternoon). I figure out that the air is dry because of air conditioner and I don't have enough water to balance it out. Drink Pocari Sweat or a lot of water helps.
I don't take anap anymore. :)
