For drama, I recommend Lanford Wilson's Rimers of Eldritch (1966). A bum is found murdered and a woman is sexually assaulted in a small town. Brilliant examination of smug conformity and paranoid scapegoating in small-town America. Wilson put some pretty gorgeous language in there as well.

For a musical, you can't beat West Side Story. Plot by Shakespeare, swingin' music by Leonard Bernstein, and if you're watching the DVD, dancing by Jerome Robbins. The best musical ever, even if you think you hate musicals.

Phantom of the Opera has been done so many times, it's boring LOL If you're talking about musicals to put on, do Working, Gypsy, Wizard of Oz, Into the Woods, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, or Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat! They're all really fun to put on, and audiences really like them. If you're talking about musicals to go and see, Wicked, hands down, Phantom of the Opera (it's positively magical on the stage, no matter how many times you see it, it gives me chills everytime I see the chandelier scene), Cats, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, and My Fair Lady. Those are all awesome musicals. Plays: Inherit the Wind, Bang Bang You're Dead, Christmas in April, The Dining Room. All of those are really good

Concerning musicals, I love many but here are two that are just plain fun.

1. Hairspray
2. Bat Boy: The Musical ( Based on the Weekly World News on-going saga: "Bat Boy Found In Cave" when I saw this IN NYC Meg Ryan was watching with her son-unusual..)

I would prefer The Lion King because it has a variety of themes. Everything is there, the music, the romance, the comedy, the tragedy, and the triumph. It's pretty enjoyable and it was fun. So if you have a stage musical, The Lion King would be a brilliant choice.

What about Miss Saigon??? It's a classic love story that you can bring up-to-date. It's all about the turmoil of the Vietnam War where an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl fell in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon. Their struggles to find each other over the ensuing years ends in tragedy for her and a fighting chance for the child he never knew he had. It's an intensely personal story of the losses we suffer and the sacrifices we make in a world gone mad.

For a typical, english musical, I suggest My Fair Lady, if you don't mind anything old fashioned. Also, Oklahoma is a lot of fun. Personally, one of my favorites is an old musical titled Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. It's not well known, but really funny...

I am going to have to agree with Dr.Gillweed, New Mexico States musical/opera of Fiddler on the roof, is the absolute best. I think it should be on Broadway. Yeah. It was that good.

I would recommend the musical "Les Miserables".
It's based on the book by Victor Hugo.
Wonderful story, beautiful music, deeply moving.
Everytime i see it i can't help but shed a few tears...

The Sound of Music, hands down because I grew up watching the rodgers and hammersteins' version.
