CPR is important to know because in the event of a cardiac arrest CPR can keep blood flowing to the brain, and extend the period of time in which professionals can attempt to resuscitate the person with any chance of return of spontaneous circulation. Additionally, CPR can stimulate the heart enough so that the patient can be defibrillated. Contrary to popular belief, not every patient who's hear stops can be shocked. CPR helps convert the heart into a shock able rhythm.
CPR is most useful in cases of cold water drowning and lightning strikes. For various reasons, which are numerous and detailed, these causes of cardiac arrest are more likely to respond well to CPR. In the most basic terms, in cold water drowning, the cold puts the body into a state where the brain can last longer with out oxygen, so even someone submerged in water for many minutes can be effectively resuscitated. In the case of lightning, the electricity that goes through the heart acts on the body in a way which makes the heart easier to restart.

CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation) can prolong the life of a person whose heart has stopped by perfusing the brain with blood just long enough for emergency personnel to take over...or to clear a choking victim's airway before it becomes life threatening.

I think it's something everyone (from older children to adults) should know. It's valuable information that just may save someone's life.

I know there are people alive today that wouldn't be if I hadn't known CPR.

The average person knowing how to give CPR is very helpful to EMT's and such because if something happens on a scene and the EMT's arrive and the patient is getting CPR it greatly increases their chance of survival. If everyone knows then everyone can help everyone so it would help your chances in the event of a misfortune.
