Okay, so I'm a guy who likes to mess with his hair and try new things. Right now I have short to medium length hair, and it's naturally straight. I've been dying to get my hair wavy, but not permanently. I've tried using a regular curling iron, and all I get are curls, not waves. What can I use to get that messy wavy look for a day?

I can't braid my hair, it's not long enough (unless I want super small waves). I was actually thinking of a triple barrel curling iron. Will that work? Anyone out there use them often?

I'm a hairdresser and I've done this to my own hair- it looks really messy and cool.
Shampoo hair
Towel dry
Apply styling creme/gel
get bobby pins
grab a section of your hair ( random sections) that is about the size of a nickel (at the scalp)
twist
make the twist into a tiny cinnamon roll (flat bun)
make it stay with bobby pins forming an X
do this all over your head
let it dry allpy hairspray take it down
it will NOT STAY if it is not ALL ALL ALL ALL the way dry and it takes a while- overnight

You can cut down drying time by blow drying it 1/2 way before you start.

you should try scrunching your hair. Pantene Pro-V has a curling mousse. It is in a container that is white and red.
after you take a shower, towel out all of the water until it is damp. then, put in the mousse. once it is in, scrunch your hair, and if you want to do it quicker, use a blow dryer. follow the instructions on the can if you blow dry. If your hair isn't thicker than thick and totally straight, it will work. I love messing with my hair too. I hope you find your perfect look! ~

try a beach type spray. theres a good one by bumble and bumble. basically it mimics the way your hair dries at the beach... ask a stylist at your local salon to reccomend one if there isn't a bumble salon near you
