You can't just call or write to a prison and ask if your family member is incarcerated there, the prisons will not release the name of an inmate.
You can try going through the courts to get an order to release his location, but I think that is a difficult path with uncertain results.
If you think he would respond to a letter - Perhaps your best course would be - to address a letter to him, by name, mailed to each prison facility that he could possibly be in. All but one, of course, he will be unknown and your letter will be undeliverable, but one letter should get through to him. When he responds, then you will know where he is.

you'll have to go down to the court house in your area to the clerks office. bring your ID cause you'll have to prove who u are. I know you have to bring some other paper work but i cant remember right now, so i would just bring what ever paper work u have. They can give you the mailing address and his booking #. Then i'm pretty sure you can get some phone number and find out how to visit and do what u need to do.... GOOD LUCK!
P.S. if you wanna write him a letter u just cant mail a letter with his name on it. u will need his inmate #. in jail your not a person your a number, when they do checks they say your prison number not his name. so just be sure you get his inmate # before writing a letter, if not it will just get sent back to you. and yes u can call a prison, cause i have before to get visiting hours for my cousin. Im in cali thu so it might be different. but they do have a # to call for information.
but im not positive on this, growing up i watched my mom go thru all his court dates and visits so all this is from memory.

This link will help you find inmates in a Federal facility
http://www.bop.gov/iloc2/locateinmate.jsp ...
If he's in a State Prison, do a search that looks like this, except without the quotation marks....
"Yourstate corrections prison inmate search"
That will get you links to the inmate lookup services.
If that doesn't help, go to the forum marked "Lost in the System" at http://www.prisontalk.com
Good luck!

Writing is going to take much longer. Make a phone call to the police in that area, get the number from information and ask them.
