When I had my son, I was told to remove it as soon as he could pull himself up, but actually there is concern now that crib bumpers are never safe. I always thought the bumpers were there to keep baby from bumping his head or suffocating between the matress and sides of the crib, but apparently the original purpose was for older style cribs where the slats were too far apart. Which now the advice is: don't use a crib where the slats are too far apart ever! Several major kids health organizations are now advizing against the use of bumpers including: American Academy of pediatrics and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

I learned this in doing research for your question, so I guess come the next baby I probably won't use one at all! Save yourself some money and protect your baby, too. Don't use one. If you do use one, remove it as soon as baby begins to stand so it doesn't get used as a step to get out of the crib or get his head and neck stuck in it.

I took the bumpers off when the kids were 9 - 12 months old. By this time they could stand in the crib and didn't need them. As for finding camoflauge bumpers, I would suggest a "better" retail store like JC Penny, Sears, Marshalls, or Bed & Linen's.

It is said by doctors not to use bumpers (because of SIDS, but I let my daughter sleep on her belly at 2 months old because she WANTED to) but I do know from experiance that once they start standing to take it off. My daughter tried to use them as leverage to climb out of the crib.

I also found out why they said to take the mobile down when they stand. She broke hers! LOL! Daddy said it sounded like a gun when off, he was laying on the couch and then he heard this loud "BAM" and when he went to check on her she was just sitting in her crib playing the the Care Bears on the mobile that she just broke, the "BAM" was the arm of the mobile slamming on the wall behind his head! LOL!

Here is something I found for the bedding.

It depends!! My first three i took off as soon as they could stand. My last not quite there he moves to much in the bed. So I'm holding off for a little longer. so If he can move and stand go for it.
