To avoid having to swallow (and thus ingest) the offending object or substance. Our taste buds combined with our sense of smell exist in part to indicate whether something we are eating is poisonous or apt to make us ill. If we couldn't spit (were absolutely indiscriminate about what we ate), what would be the purpose of these senses?

TO avoid swallowing the thick whitish/yellowish/greenish phlegm.

If they have to spit it out, they should spit it into a wad of 2 tissue papers and throw it away in the gargage bin. When spitting into the tissue paper turn your face away from people so they don't see the disgusting act.

if you go back in history of the human being most likely spitting was a way of marking territory, it is also used to get rid of a bad taste. Cave men had to taste many plants to find the ones they could eat.

In other words, it's an offensive way of showing that you are offended.
