you don't seem to know just how big you auto is. practice sitting in the drivers seat and try judging distances from the car with some kind of markers. then get out and see how far you really are from the markers. you don't need to be driving to do this. you can measure off car lenghts from the car and then sit in the driver's seat and see what it looks like.

It is excellent that you notice this and seek improvement in your skills!! Unfortunately, in this country, they only teach and test your knowledge of the rules of the road, but not how to actually drive the car.

The best way to start learning these skills in in al class typically called something like a 'Car Control Clinic'. These are held on large parking lots or old unused airport runways, where you can learn how a car behaves in a safe environment. These are a combination of classroom sessions teaching the principles and driving skills exercises out on the wide expanse of pavement. You both learn to drive a car with confidence, and gives you the skills to handle well the inevitable emergencies so that they do not turn into accidents.

Where do you find this training? The best places are a dedicated school such as CarControl.com (www.carcontrol.com) or car clubs such as the BMW Car Club (www.bmwcca.org), the Sports Car Club of America (www.scca.org), Miata club, etc. For the clubs, just check out their web sites, find a local chapter and ask questions -- if you're interested, people will be very helpful (and you do not have to have a BMW or whatever to be welcomed!).

You can also go to these car clubs and ask about Autocross racing. This is racing in cones on large lots or airports; it is lots of tun, quite safe, and really teaches you how to maneuver. You can also go to Karting tracks where they rent time in racing karts (not put-put go karts) - here's one list of tracks to start - http://www.oskarsystems.com/clients.htm

If you live where it snows, you should find an empty parking lot and practice sliding and recovering in the first good snow.

Once you start doing these things, you will meet people who will know where to go next in your area -- you can take it as far as you want to go.

A really good approach to this is to buy one of those radio controlled cars and play with it until you're an expert. Keep it in lane. Especially, parallel park it and note what you have to do with the front wheels to get it smoothly in and out.

This will teach you all the moves without "tapping" anyone or listening to a male powertrip by a "friend" who volunteers to "help" you by being bossy.

get out in the country somewhere away from everything and just push it to the limits .... see what it can do ... slide around .... lockup the brakes lol .... it helps to have an old beater for that and a couple of spare tires lol .... but you learn alot.
