well first I'd be honest but fabricate some of your explanations to lessen the hurt towards the other person and would let him know that it's not him it's you and it was just a fling nothing serious if that's the case in your situation because ultimately you don't want to be the bad guy but still remain honest( honesty is the key) but show compassion and offer your friendship with open arms if he refuses your proposal it's his loss because he may never know what kind of friend you can be!

Say " your a real cool person, fun to be around but I see you more as a friend than something more"
It doubles as a breakup line too...Ive used it

you cant. there's no way to do it. it may not bother you but that could be some serious pain for the other person.
and you had a friend do it?? that makes it even worse! like you're so over the guy you cant even formally end the relationship??? that's kinda cold to me....
:O

Well...
Unfortunately, what's done is done.
Apologize sincerely and openly express exactly how you feel.
To repair the damages, you simply need to be their friend.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.
I hope everything works out.
I hope my advice helped and I apologize if it didn't.
Take care!

IT SOULD LIKE THE PERSON YOU TRYING TO BREAK UP
WITH NEED TO LEAVE YOU ALONG, THE FACT THAT YOU
WOULD ASK SOMEONE ELSE TO DO WHAT YOU SHOULD\HAVE DONE IS NOT COOL. WHAT GO AROUND
WILL COME BACK AROUND. TRUST ME YOU WILL NOT
LIKE IT IF SOMEONE DID THAT TO YOU. YOU SHOULD
BEEN HONEST WITH HIM FROM THE START.

well the only way it's not going to hurt his feeling is if he really doesn't like you. otherwise, you're gonna have to hurt his feelings.

there is no way to not hurt their feelings, unless they feel the same way. i think you should have broken it off yourself though, even though its really hard. at least talk to him about it.
