We tried the rhythm method, too, charting temperature, discharge, cervical position (if these words don't ring a bell, then you're not using the rhythm method.) Such a drag! But one night, in a fit of passion, we conveniently misinterpreted all the signs and did it anyway. nine months later, our oldest was born. btw, you can get pregnant from the pre-ejaculate, too, so he could withdraw every single time and you might still get knocked up.

The rhythm method is not a reliable way to prevent pregnancy for most people. Over the course of 1 year, about 25 out of 100 typical couples who rely on the rhythm method to prevent pregnancy will have an accidental pregnancy. Of course, this is an average figure, and the chance of getting pregnant depends on whether a couple uses one or more of the rhythm method tools correctly and consistently and that they do not have unprotected sex during the fertile period.

In general, how well each type of birth control method works depends on a lot of things. These include whether a person has any health conditions or is taking any medications that might interfere with its use. In the case of the rhythm method, it depends on how consistent a woman's ovulatory cycle is and how accurate a couple is at keeping track of when she could be ovulating. It also depends on whether the method chosen is convenient - and whether the person remembers to use it correctly all the time.

You are right to be apprehensive! Withdrawal is not very effective especially if you are young fertile female. Rhythm is good if you have been through the actual classes on it. My cycle is very regular but I am positive that I ovulate twice a month therefore I need to have the other indicators they give you in class to know when I'm ovulating. I have become pregnant twice during generally assumed "safe" times even when withdrawing. Take a class if this is your chosen birth control method. Your OB/GYN can reccommend one.

Withdrawl is NOT an effective pregnancy prevention method.

The rhythm method that relies on assuming a standard 28 day cycle with ovulation occuring on the 14th day is also NOT reliable pregnancy prevention method.

Natrual family planning, which involves charting temperature daily, charting vaginal mucus daily, charting possible distrubances daily, and then using this and other information to calculate fertile and infertile days, can be highly effective if done with care. It does involve abstainence (or condom use) on the fertile days.

After my second child, my wife and I practiced the rythm and withdrawal methods. It did not work. We had two more kids. The pills were driving her up the wall so I did what was best. Had a vasectomy done.
