Amateur boxing is about safety, i.e., the use of headguards, jerseys, and heavier gloves. Amateur boxing is scored on the point system - every legal effective blow counts one point and knock downs and standing eight counts don't count extra.
The goal of an amateur boxer is to outpoint his or her opponent. Amateurs do not get paid for competing, however stipend monies are available for elite boxers at the national and international levels. Young boxers, ages 8 to 12, box 3-1 minutes rounds; 13-14 year olds box 3-1.5 minute rounds; 15-16 year olds and novice (age 17-34, with less than 11 bouts) box 3-2 minute rounds. Open boxers (with 11 or more bouts) compete in 4-2 minute rounds. Amateur referees say only three words: "stop, break, box" when controlling a bout. Committing a foul (slapping, hitting behind the head, holding, low blow, etc.) will give the offending boxer's opponent 2 points.

Amateur and pro boxing are two entirely different sports and can't be compared.

Amateur boxing has three round fights and is scored simply based on the number of blows that make contact with the scoring area (head and body). thats why amateur gloves often are white, so scoring is easier.

Although a KO still wins, there is no premiom for a knockdown

Amature Boxing is boxing scored off of a "touch" system, the more your opponet touches you the more points he gets no matter how hard the shots are or if they do any damage. Professional Boxing is different, Many more factors are taken into consideration and a knockdown is more important.

Amateurs fight only 3 rounds. Winner's based on the number of blows. Pros fight longer and judged by their performance(k.o. powerpunch, etc). Biggest difference is the PAY. Pros get millions and amateurs don't.
