Why not write a song about having writer's block. Some really talented artists have come up with some clever songs. I believe Chicago's 25-or-6-to-4 was written because the guy was trying to come up with a song, and he happened to look up at a Dr. Pepper wall clock and he found inspiration.

Anything can be an inspiration if you think outside the box.

"Inspiration" spells the HUGE difference between a good song and a great song. songwriting is for the passionate. when one is full of passion for something, everything just comes pouring out. spend some alone/quiet time and meditate about what you're passionate about in life. recall your experiences and the turning points in your life...the decisions you've made/situations that changed you forever. start from that.

write a song about a guy who is breaking up with a girl because he realized he's still in love with his ex girlfriend.
or you can have the idea for my song...this guy sang a song to me about taking two shots of jack daniels to forget all the memories of his last relationship, so I made a song after I broke up with him...telling him to get over it...take the two shots of Jack and don't ever call back...anyways probably a country song.

I might be reading this wrong...but....don't write on someone else's life...write from the heart...

Write about a broken heart...

or a little lighter...
write about getting in the car or riding the bus and taking note on the people...how the world is bigger than we give credit for....Who knows!

Songwriters I believe pick up from their own ideas to express their sentiments. Others pick on their inspirations and etc., etc.... Just be yourself and think what you would like to express to reach out to your supposed audience. Good luck.

Most of my songs are about the mindlessness of a lot of people including our politicians. I'm pretty cynical though :O)

Write about Budd Dwyer's televised suicide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budd_Dwyer

Or the newswoman Chris Chubbuck's televised suicide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Chubbuck

edit: Now that I think about it, Filter's song "Nice Shot" is actually about Dwyer, so maybe you shouldn't do that one.

You can't go wrong with the "I love you but I'll never see you again after tonight" motif.
