I've had several small groups in our home and been in several.......some small some large. Some with couples and some with only women. The best group we've ever been in was a care group (did not do a Bible Study) with 6 couples, where we would have dessert and coffee and share and pray. Sometimes we wouldn't have the last couple leave until 1:00 am....
But if you are doing a curriculum small group, you could do ok with more people. I'm starting a ladies small group in our home in the fall doing Beth Moore's new Bible Study on Daniel....so there are so many different type of care groups you could start. Our church is very large and we are moving to a non-Sunday School for adults, but only serve on Sundays and then our small groups would serve as our SS class. They really help to plug families in that normally have a hard time fitting into a large church. So to ask the ideal number? You will just have to experiment and see what will work for you......good luck and I pray you find the exact group that suits you!

Our small Groups in our Community are about 8-10 families. But most of our meetings are women's small groups, meant small groups and social events with the whole family. It works quite well.
Clarification: I belong to an Ecumenical Charismatic Community in addition to my church. Our church does not have small groups so the community serves that purpose.

Max 18. That is from an old study and current numbers may differ slightly, but the study methodology was good. They recommended reforming groups to keep them between 9 and 18.

In our class we have about 10-12 regulars and about 20 enrolled. I enjoy the small class because there seems to be more class discussion that away.
