All vultures find food with their incredible eyesight, but new world (American) vultures have a keenly developed sense of smell, on which they rely for most of their foraging. Turkey vultures use an even combination of smell and sight--whichever reaches them first. The rest of the new world vultures rely partially on smell and more on eyesight, or the activities of turkey vultures. Old world vultures have no sense of smell, and rely solely on eyesight.

When you see a bunch of vultures circling above, they have found something dead.

A vulture just flies finding dead creatures or nearly dead at the least because they're scavengers not hunters.

They circle around in the air while looking down at creatures (usually creatures who are on their own or not in a hurd), basically waiting for them to die. Once they're pretty sure their target animal is dead, they swoop in and feast.

They ave very strong olfactory(?) glands - good noses. They can smell even a fresh dead animal from far away.
