If so, what does anyone know they call them? Are they known by any new names since the U.S. came up with 'Freedom Fries"?

American fries are French fries - the French were eating them before America was even discovered

The French didn't even invent french fries. The Dutch did, French refers to the cut of the fry not the country of orgin

They are called pomme frittes, and they taste better than here. A bit more salty, and the inside is softer. They were all over Europe like that, and served usually in a paper "cone" container.
