It is virtually impossible that shepherds would have been in the fields with their sheep in December. Sheep were kept corralled near the owner's home for the winter, not out in the fields.

March is a lot more likely.

It is absolutely true that NOBODY knows when Jesus was born. The Bible doesn't say and no historical writings ever mentioned it. The date December 25 was chosen to coincide with the pagan mid-winter celebration. It was also the date that many other non-christian "savior" gods was born. It was a very popular month and date for deities of that time period to be born.

It doesn't really matter what day and month the savior was born. All that matters is that the savior was born... and what ever day we pick to celebrate that birth is fine. Some christians actually believe that celebrating the birth, death, and resurrection isn't a seasonal thing, but a daily thing.

The reason that Christ's birth is celebrated in December was to help Christians avoid the temptations associated with a pagan holiday called Saturnalia, which marked the winter solstice.

Saturnalia was an occasion for celebration, visits to friends, and the presentation of gifts, particularly wax candles, perhaps to signify the returning light after the solstice. Homes were decorated with greenery. Candles and lamps chased away the spirits of darkness.

People also indulged in various sexually immoral practices, which would have been quite a draw for most people. Seneca complained that the "whole mob has let itself go in pleasures."

To give the Christian something better to do, the bishops in the region decided to hold a mass in honor of Christ's birth. It was called the Feast of the Nativity.

Of course, as Christianity became the state religion, people who "converted" brought their pagan ways with them, so by the time of the 6th century, the practice was corrupted.

As to when Jesus was actually born, He would not have been born later than early autumn, as the climate of Israel resembles the North American continent in many ways. Shepherds would not be watching their flocks by night in the winter.

There was no "December" back then. The pagans created the first calendar in accord with their crops and harvesting. Christians choose December so they could convert pagans in to Christianity. The Pagans celebrated winter harvest then. I've read that Jesus was probably born in spring because baby lambs are mentioned in the Bible as being around the manager at that time. So according to our modern calendar He would have been born in March or April.

The Discovery Channel is the work of the Devil to sway you from xtian belief.

J/K. Since there were no contemporary writers that documented the birth/life of Jesus, everything about him and the Christian religion is just speculation and hearsay. In modern language it would be called "revisionist history". Believe in God and Jesus all you want, but the Bible is just a book, written by man several decades if not a full century after the death of Jesus of Nazareth.

I have heard from March to Sept.... the first clue that he was not born in Dec is being that Israel is in the same hemisphere as the USA.... and when its winter here its winter there... this being said... the shepherds would not have been in the fields tending their sheep in the winter ... the sheep were stabled after oct due to the rainy season.
However... in saying all that... the scriptures do not record and exact date... and I believe this is for a purpose... keep in mind in the Hebrew tradition ... people of God did not celebrate the birth of a person but rather recognized the death. "When" Christ was born isnt as important as the simple fact that he was born... He did come and make the sacrifice. God bless you :)

Jesus was NOT born in December, it is just a day that the Romans and Catholics came up with to bring everyones diverse holidays together. Many people believe it was during the Autumn during a Jewish Holiday because God is never random but on purpose.

Your question or statement I do hope will cause so to think, but I just know it will not.

If only some of the so called bible teachers and preachers would really study the words of the Bible they would see that the March-April period is the only possibility based upon Bible words. I say March-April due to the overlap of the Jewish calender compared to the calender in use by most in regards to the months.

For me as a "NO" stated in my own opinion in my own words: It is very funny that the so called Christians do assign to their supposed leader and founder a Birthday and insist on what day to celebrate it. Lol - LOL.

Now just who is the leader and who is the follower?

I guess that is not important as long as the world keeps turning and all these questions and statements are posted here on Yahoo for me. In that I do pass a lot of time, laugh a lot, and just enjoy my contentment as I take it one day at a time. So thanks to you all.

Christmas was a date picked but the later church to celebrate Jesus' birth, which coincided with another religious festival that non-christian religions were using in Europe. Nothing in the bible says he was born on Dec. 25. Would it change things if you knew his birth date?

I think this is based on references to sheep in the fields or something like that.

The birth story is pure astrological symbolism mixed with a false history to make parallels to Moses. It never happened.

If there was a historical Jesus, we certainly have no idea when he was born (including what century!).

The day I ever listen to Discovery as any Biblical or Christian source is the day I throw my Bible in the sewer and give my soul to the devil. The same is true if I ever listened to the History Channel and it's many derivitives in their "explanation" of the Bible or any part of Christianity. That's like listening to Satan on how to be a Christian. God Bless you.
