If it was your dog, you should have been the one to make the decision. I would definitely consult an attorney. No one has a right to put your dog down without your consent.
Unfortunately, this situation can't be undone. But perhaps you can get some justice for your dog.

was the person a friend or someone who found your dog roaming? Had the dog been with that person for sometime? What was the reasoning that the person took your dog to the vet in the first place? Did you place your pet with this person to take care of? So many questions to be answered before you pursue anything.
I, personally think, if I left my beloved pet with someone to take care of in my absense, and something was going on that my pet was in such pain that it needed vet care and the vet said..sorry but I feel this animal should be put down to end its pain and nothing else could be done..then I would thank my friend for helping all they could and let it close at that.

Did the dog have a tatoo or microchip to identify you as the owner? Why was the dog in the care of someone else? If you left the dog with the person willingly, them you may have transferred the right to her care temporarily. While it may have been the moral thing to do to attempt to contact you, I'm not sure it would have be illegal if you left the dog in that person's care. In addition, if the dog was in pain or suffering to the extent that this person believed it was necessary to take the dog to the vet, then perhaps this was the best decision anyway. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sounds like another lazy citizen trying to abuse the legal system. Why are people so quick to sue? I'm sure the dog was old. If it did have cancer, what would you have done? Would you have let it live and suffer? I would hope you'd have it put to sleep.
The person probably did you a favor. This reminds me of the lady who sued McDonald's for the hot coffee.

I'm sorry for your loss. :(
I don't know the whole story here, but cancer in dogs can be extremely painful. She could have been going into organ or systemic failure. A burst cancerous spleen, or massive tumor in the heart would mean that she would bleed to death in hours with incredible pain.
You can do what you think is right, but do try to get the whole story. They should have tried to contact you if it were possible to do in a humane amount of time at the point of discovery.

Did the vet know that the dog did not belong to the person that brought him in? How would he know to call you? Does your dog have an ID chip or tag?

I am so sorry for your loss.. the vet and your friend were not being mean, but likely trying to help..even if it was misguided..
I believe it would be best for you to grieve for the loss of your dog, and just know that she is in a better place.
.Anger, and accusations will only soil the precious memories...When you think of her, you want to remember all of the best times...not all of the anger and ill will, and injustices that were done...
I know it is hard, as i have suffered great loss... But, if you can set the anger and frustration aside, you will surely have more peace...

Well, WHO was this person?
If you are an underage child, who wouldn't be paying the Vet bill, and it was your Parents who made this decision, then: LEAVE IT ALONE.
If you are a grown up and you pay your own bills, and some stranger took your dog to the vet, and made this choice, SUE THEM.

Sue her to death. Also sue the vet for not checking ownership of your dog. I am so terrible sorry for this avoidable tragedy.
Run free sweetie.
