Handling chopsticks is not very difficult., when you learn their principle of operation and then practice for a few days.
Take one chopstick and wedge it in the web between the thumb and the first finger. (the finger next to the thumb). Hold it there and do not move it again. This chopstick is locked and does not move. Pick up the other chopstick and hold it with the same hand that holds the first chopstick. The second chopstick is grasped by the end of the thumb and the adjacent finger (first finger.). It can be manipulated like a pencil. Now make sure the chopsticks are of equal length. You can use your other hand to do this. (when you get the hang of it, you can do it by tapping the two chopsticks downward against a plate or the table to allow one chopstick to slide through your fingers to the same desired length of the other one. This is done frequently throughout the meal..
A piece of food is grasped between the ends of the two chopsticks. The moveable/non-locked chopstick pushes the food against the locked chopstick to a position between the ends of both chopsticks. The chopstick squeezes the food against the locked chopstick and the food is trapped between the two chopsticks. Now you can lift the chopsticks and captured food to your mouth.
Chopsticks are used with rice bowels. The combination of food,
chopsticks, and plate is masochism. If you cannot use a bowl then ask for and use a fork.
Using a rice bowl is simple. Fill the bowl almost to the top with rice. fill it up leaving about one to three quarters of an inch from the top. The top space is for the pieces of food.
You hold the bowl up close to your mouth and use the chopsticks to grasp the food and transport it the short distance to your mouth. When you want to pick up some rice, bring the bowl closer to your mouth and push the rice into your mouth. In other words shovel it in. This is not bad manners. Every native of countries in Southeast Asia does it that way. If the piece is hard to grasp tilt both chopsticks to a horizontal position and pick it up. That trick, usually, will allow you to pick up the slipperyest morsels.
Picking up a spare rib is easy. You pick it up and bring it to your mouth take a bite then put the sparerib back down in your rice bowl. You pick it up again when you want to take the next bite.
(with experience you can hold the sparerib and chew the meat off the bone without returning it to your bowl. One more trick. There is an easy way to pick up a dumpling. Use the locked chopstick to stab the dumpling and the other chopstick then grasps the dumpling's edge, to have a good grip.
Practice using the technique until your fingers tire then switch to a fork. Soon you'll eat the whole meal using no fork at all.
Your fingers may be sore the next day but that does not last long.
A common challenge in Japan is to ask the foreigner to pick up an ice cube. It can be done. Choose a small icecube. Pick up up the cube with the chopsticks in a horizontal attitude. Grasp the cube and wait a few seconds. (it'll thaw a bit between the chopsticks if you grasp it tightly. Then lift it up and collect your beer bet..

Seeker,

You seek help, happy to do so!

First practice with the wooden chopsticks
(Vs. plastic, bone, or old ivory ones)
Place unsalted peanuts in a small bowl,
half filled. Have a second empty bowl next
to the other one.
Now, pick up the sticks and hold them
with thumb and index and resting on third
finger. Don´t hold too tight, and use the index
finger as the moving one. One stick stays in
place, the second is moved with the index.
Now, pick up the slippery unsalted peanut,
and slowly place it in the empty bowl.
And keep repeating until you'll get it!

Happy chopsticking!

# Put one chopstick between the palm and the base of the thumb, using the ring finger (the fourth finger) to support the lower part of the stick. With the thumb, squeeze the stick down while the ring finger pushes it up. The stick should be stationary and very stable.

# Use the tips of the thumb, index and middle fingers to hold the other stick like a pen. Make sure the tips of the two sticks line up.

# Pivot the upper stick up and down towards the stationary lower stick. With this motion one can pick up food of surprising size.

# With enough practice, the two sticks function like a pair of pincers.

see the link for a pic on how to use them.

The way I taught my kids was to hold one like a pencil and place the second one between your index finger and thumb. It takes some practice.

Practice picking up marbles with the chopsticks.
If you can pick those up, you can pick up anything.
