I will answer this with the same answer I have already given (and gotten a best answer for) on what was here before the big bang:

One of the greatest questions if not the greatest ever asked probablly. This is definitly a philosophical and not a scientific question. I've heard all the scientific and new age jargon for I have no clue. When you think about it, it makes more sense to conclude that something has always existed (Which I believe is God) then for something to be created from nothing. Pi and non perfect squae square roots are very difficult to deal with because they go on to infinity without a clear patern. The universe also stretches on for infinity as far as we can tell. Yet, I have never heard of something coming from nothing. We cannot comprehend infinity because we have finite minds. God probablly kept us from understanding this because it is a key to the universe. How much more powerful is a device that can control the very fabric of the universe then an atomic bomb. If we fully understood hurricanes then we could control them. Likewise, God keeps us from knowing these things because he is the rightful controler of the universe which humbles us. Somehow these infinitly long numbers form pi and most square roots and likewise God's infinite history forms what He is today. We might never truly understand it, but the best explanation is still that God is "the Alpha and the Omega; the beggining and the end". He was, is, and always will be.

No one made God. God has always been, always will be. Do we understand that? No. Our minds don't have infinite capability I'm afraid. If we don't understand we tend to just deny. I know your little boy won't completely understand but I think you'll be surprised at how easily he will accept the truth. Little kids still haven't learned to doubt and disbelieve yet as older kids and adults have. Even if you have to admit to him/her you don't completely understand how God has always been, don't lie to the child by telling him/her anything but the truth.
I've often wondered why we humans feel we know so much more than God himself.
There's a scripture in the Old Testament where God asks Job, "Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare if thou hast understanding." (Job 38:4) God goes on to ask Job where was he when God set the stars and the clouds and the sea and the darkness in place?
Indeed, where were all who dare say God never was, or God is a fantasy of men? Where were they? Where were we all?
We were a thought and a hope and a dream in the mind of God. We were hidden away in his heart of hearts that we might some day be his friends and companions. A people he could love and commune with. A people that he could train to rule and reign at his side some day very, very soon.
Where were we so long ago when God "was"? Declare now if you know! The answer is we were not! God was alone.
But I'm pleased to be here now to whisper to God "here am I Lord, here am I, let me serve and worship and love you".

SInce we have a beginning, it is difficult to imagine someone NOT having a beginning.

I think about it sometimes like a guppy born in a pretty bowl on a table. To that guppy, the bowl is his world. It has always been his world. When he came into being, the bowl was the world he lived in. He knows that his foodd is provided each day. Even if he is a very smart fish, his understanding is bound by the perimeters of his world.

That guppy has has no comprehension of the world beyond his bowl or the dynamics involved in making sure he gets food and oxygen and clean water everyday.

Our comprehension of how God could always have been there is like that guppy. Even the Bible says that now we see through a glass darkly, but then face to face.

Tell, your little boy, that just like he is your ittle boy, you are God's little girl. You do not understand everything there is to know about God, but He promises us that if we seek HIm, He will teach us about himself as we get older, and someday, He will make us understand everything.

Read 1Corinthians 2:9-16 This is one of many places that discusses this.

"How can I respond to my little boy?" - this means to me he's under 10? I'd start with
God has always been here, and will be forever. God welcomes everyone into heaven, animals also, because God forgives and loves everything he has made. God has photos of every leaf, sandcastle, cloud. God has laughed and cried with us. God is happier when we try than when we give up early, but understands.
Keep it simple until the age of reason, then explain in adult terms; free will, and all the concepts over again.
Also, my wife and I - kept on the same page all of our sons life about being Roman Catholic. This limits the confusion. (I don't know your belief, but you have them, what I meant is family living same message as you teach.)

Congratulations, on your children. Your in for quite a fun ride.

First of all, don't worry about not being able to explain this in a way your son will understand... because he is a child and he still has both innocents and a great imagination he will understand just fine. Tell him that God, the creator of all that he sees around him, didn't have a creator, because He is the creator. Let him know that God is the Beginning and the End, and because of this He lacks both a beginning and end. It's like he universe... it doesn't have a start point and it doesn't have an ending point either... it just keeps going on forever! Its that simple! God bless!

First of all those first few were idiots! Anyway that is one question that can never really be awnsered it says in the Bible in th begging was God and the word was God and along thoses lines i havent been reading as much as i should be...anyways God has always been here. He created the earth he created everything! Its kinda unexplainable. And i think u could probably tell him the truth God was created he didnt come from anywhere. No one made God he has always been here. he is great and almighty. It's really someone evereryone should get to know.

Are there a lot of stupid parents out there or just people who think claiming their little boy asks will change the answer to the obvious?

No one created God, God has always been and always will be. That is the only answer regardless of age.

When He was asked who He was he responded "I AM"
God just is- He has no begining and He has no end. This is not something we can fathom or really understand because we cannot imagine operating outside of the boundaries of time and all we know of has a beginning and an end- and even if we cannot actually see the beginning and the end of something, for example the earth, our minds try to figure out, imagine, create a scenario for its begining and its end. God just is, He always has been and always will be and it is futile to try to figure ito ut with our 3 pounds of rotting worm food. Anyway, you don't have to say all of that to him- it can be simplified but the fact is no one made God- He just is and simple faith with confirmation through His word will bring understanding

It's stated in the Book of Revelations 22: 13:
I am Alpha and Ome'ga, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Is.
God is Infinite.

To answer your question, i would like to use Karl Marx's concept of religion. Marx claims that capitalists made the idea of God in order to control the "propertyless" workers, which is also known as the proletariats. For him, the concept of God was created by the capitalist so that the proletariats will submit theirselves to the power of the capitalist. Therefore, the concept of God was used by the egoistic capitalists to take an economical advantage from the proletariats.
