I'm taking a trip to L.A. this weekend and I definitely want to hit the beach, but since this will be my first time there, I don't want to waste time looking for a good beach. Which one's the cleanest, nicest, and close to good restaurants/shops???

I like both Malibu & Venice,
if you have to choose, I will choose Malibu.

This story about the city:

Malibu is a city located in western Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 12,575.

The City of Malibu is a 27-mile strip of Pacific coastline; a beachfront community famous for its warm, sandy beaches, and for being the home of countless movie stars and others associated with the Southern California motion picture and recording industries. Most Malibu residents live within a few hundred yards of Pacific Coast Highway (California State Route 1) which traverses the city; the city is also bounded (more or less) by Topanga and Pacific Palisades to the east, the Santa Monica Mountains to the north, the Pacific Ocean to the south, and Ventura County to the north and west. Its other beaches include Malibu State Beach and Topanga State Beach; its parks include Malibu Creek State Park and the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area.

A popular bumper sticker reads, "Malibu: A Way of Life." Other slogans: "Where the mountains meet the sea", "27 miles of scenic beauty", "Malibu - life is too short to live it elsewhere".

90265 is an actual ZIP code in Malibu. Although most of 90265 actually lies outside incorporated area of the city, the U.S. Postal Service considers all addresses in that ZIP code to be Malibu addresses. Real estate agents designate these adjoining areas "Malibu Post Office".

Venice, is a district in west Los Angeles, California. It is best known for its canals and beaches, but it also has a somewhat Bohemian residential area as well as a colorful boardwalk. Its area codes are 310 and a recently added 424 overlay. Its ZIP Code is 90291.

Depends on what you're looking for...lots of people or not...
You can find lots of nice beaches in LA -
Malibu is my favorite but other nice beaches include:
Venice
Santa Monica - I like the shopping more than the beach but still good place to go.
Hermosa Beach
Manhattan Beach
further south you can check out the beaches in Long Beach, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, Huntington Beach

Malibu is a lot quieter and not as many people. Venice has a lot of vendors walking around and is quite crowded so it depends on what you are looking for. Long Beach, Santa Monica, Laguna Beach and Huntington Beach are also good options.

Well I am a local of Palos Verdes and I am a total beach bum! I love going to Burn Out Beach which is in Torrance. It has a snack bar and about two blocks up is the Riviera Village. There is cute stores for both men and women that are very fun. There are about 5 bars, mny restronts, super markets, hair salons, and much more. Also if you are closer, Laguna Beach is lots of fun to!

Hope you have fun!
