You probably have dry eyes so try using 'tears plus' or 'tears forte' which is what my Optometrist recommended a few years back. It's excellent. If that doesn't work -see your Optometrist to see if you have allergies or any other problems but I think it should be one of the two.

Allergies are could be the cause. You say the eye drops didn't work but were they allergy eye drops? Benadryl is a good allergy medicine that relieves irritated eyes but it can make you drowsy. Claritin works good too but it doesn't make you tired.

You might also want to use a saline eye wash. All you do is put a quarter teaspoonful of salt in a half cup of warm water and bathe your eye. Do this a couple of times a day. I've done it when I was pregnant and couldn't take allergy medicine.

If the irritation is severe or prolonged or the eye is painful, you might want to see a doctor to rule out an infection. If it is something like pink eye, antibiotics will cure it.

First of all see whether it is in one eye or in both the eyes. if in both then it may be some allergic phenomena. cause may be some local factors (e.g. chemicals in cosmetics) or general like pollen grains, environmental dust, fumes etc. Remedy is to get rid of the environment or chemicals by avoiding it or protect your eyes with them. some times even wearing specs can also give you irritation of eyes.
Secondly see if there is redness in the eyes or some watery or muco-purulent discharge from your eyes. then it is an infection. consult your Ophthalmologist.
Thirdly sometimes weak eyesight also gives irritation. check it out with your eye specialist. if the irritation is restricted to one eye only then you must consult to your eye doctor please.
And lastly occult mental worries and anxiety can also lead to the same sort of dysfunction. where you have to spend some time with the psychiatrist or your Yoga-guru.
Or if nothing of the above works use antihistaminics at least for three months else use "Moisol" to keep your eyes wet.

If it's been bothering you for over a year you really need to go to the eye doctor. the exams aren't usually over $50 and they can tell you whats wrong and give you eye drops that will help the conditions. If it was just something in your eye it would have flushed it out by now.

go to Web MD, there are any different eye infections out there and it sounds like you have one. Web MD will give you the names and the effects of the infections or diseases of the eye. It is very important to see an eye doctor atleast once a year even if you do not wear glasses.
