She had her first heat a year ago and she hasn't had a noticable one since, so I assume she has silent heats, but then how do I know when she IS in heat? I live in the country and there's not alot of male dogs to hang around, so that won't let me know...

I know I'm gonna get a bunch of mean answers telling me not to breed my dog (I've read some other questions) but I'm not trying to make money, I got my rat terrier two years ago and she has such a great personality that everybody in my family wants one of her babies now. I know all about animal shelters too.

i have a little doxie mix.. She looks just like a smaller Benji..and all of my friends have been begging me to have her bred, so they can have one of her puppies...I have to admit that I have been tempted... but, last Thursday I had her spayed..That is the best decision I could make for my little girl... Now, when friends ask me to breed her to provide them with puppies, I don't have to make excuses, because she is spayed....she will never need to be anything other than a precious pet..

Allowing her to remain fertile, increases her risks of getting breast tumors..allowing her to have a litter more than doubles her chances of getting breast tumors, which often become cancerous..( I have lost two wonderful dogs to cancer. )

You DO have homes for the 5 or so puppies that you will produce..But are they all forever homes?

Will the recipients of your puppies allow their pups to breed, and each produce another 5 or more pups? Your responsibility goes on and on...

Soon, your terrier/doxie mixes will become more and more mixed, until they are undefinable, and certainly not fashionable..

A good personality is not a reason to breed!!!!!! A bad temperment is a reason NOT to breed, but a dog needs way more than that to be a breeding prospect!!!!!!!!!
If the dog is show quality, had all the health clearances,AND has a sound temperment....THEN one thinks about breeding. You are just looking to add pet quality puppies to the world. That is not a reason to breed. What if she is not a good mom??? That can effect the puppies temperment. What if then the puppies have behavior issues and then people do not want them because they are not what they were expecting??? There are a lot of things that can go wrong during whelping and rearing that can effect puppies. Maybe you should consider that before breeding a pet quality dog.

Based on my friends' rat terrier, she'll get really cuddly with you and kind of whining (like she has PMS) :)

If you have homes for the puppies, no reason you shouldn't let her have a litter. But, for her health, you really should consider having her spayed after the puppies are weaned. Uterine cancer is a big problem with dogs/cats that aren't fixed.

All I know to tell you is find a friend or someone that has a male. You could bring yours over every 2-4 weeks. A male can tell when they're coming in. Other than that, I don't know unless you take her to the vet.

AFTER you SPAY her,you will KNOW that she'll NEVER be in season AGAIN!!!
Anything that cycles THAT BADLY,is EXTERMELY *UN-LIKEY* to take a breeding. And WHY would you WANT MORE LIKE THAT???

Everybody SAYS they want a pup when there is NO CHANCE of having to TAKE one!!! THEY WILL NOT take one when it's REAL!! GROW UP!!!
