I am just wondering if anyone else has a son or daughter that sucks their thumb. I have heard all the stories about how it ruins their teeth and I don't want that to happen. They are way past the stage of using a pacifier so that won't work. If you know of any remedies or solutions that would help I would love to know.

I don't about many remedies other than nail polish, hot sauce, things like that. They actually make a nail polish specifically for biters and believe me it tastes GROSS. They sell it at Sallys beauty supply. I've been asking myself this question, my son is 4 months and sucking on his thumb and I really want him to stop before it gets to be a permanent thing but I won't be putting nail polish on him any time soon lol.

I'm not a mom, but I have worked in day care centers in the past.
Some parents put nail polish (I don't know if it's a special kind or what) on their child's thumb. Apparently it gives the thumb a bitter/foul taste.
One parent made her son wear a mitten (it was the middle of summer!). I don't recommend that method. By the end of the day, that mitten was a disgusting mess!
I have also seen parents put a band-aid or a gauze-type of wrapping around the thumb to deter the behavior.
Good luck - kids can be so stubborn!

I dont know what you should do, but my sister is 25 yrs old and has had a few surgeries to try and correct the problems that sucking her thumb caused and her teeth are still not fixed yet. So yes it is a serious problem, do whatever you have to do to make your child break that habit.

My son is 5 and he sucks his thumb for comfort and we have not attempted to stop him. My best friend sucked her thumb for the longest and you cannot tell. My son does have some teeth issues on the side of his mouth, but we believe when his permanent teeth grow in he will have stopped the habit. He has autism, so we won't make him stop it will be harder on us.

My cousin sucked his thumb untill he was 15,his parents started putting Tobasco sauce on his thumb.It did not take long for him to stop after that but now he loves hot sauce.And he has no problems with his teeth.

Sorry, I don't know too many remedies, but I have heard people say put something on your thumb that you don't like. Perhaps, something that has a odor.
