Others have mentioned the Ruger Model 10/22 and I agree, it's probable the best value 22 on the market...The synthetic stock models can be had for under $200 and some of the more basic(wood -stock) models are right around $200...Check your local Wal-Mart as they will have the best prices...BUT, please take someone with you that knows what they are looking at, all rifles are not "made equal" .

The Henry Goldenboy and Winchester Model 9422 are nice lever action 22's and run a little over $200...Bolt action 22's are generally very well made but expensive...

You have lots of choices in your price range, to take a look at a few go to "gunbroker.com" they will have hundreds of 22's for sale...And sometimes you can find very good deals on GB...Another site to check is "gunsamerica.com" between the two they will have over 50,000 firearms for sale at any one time...

If you wanted to save your bucks for a little longer and spend more? My all time favorite 22 is the Weatherby XXII, a nice used one can be had in the $300-$500 range...I prefer the 15 shot tube model over the 10 round clip...This is one great auto 22! ..It's well worth your time to "find" the right one at the right price...

Another favorite of mine is the Winchester Model 62, but collectors are way too proud of them...If you get the chance to shoot one some time though, they are a very nice, well made 22...but overpriced!!

Ruger 10/22 is probably the best all around .22 auto on the market. Get on the web and look at competitors in .22 sports and they are often using custom Rugers. Shot around and get a good basic 10/22, then as you have time and $$, you can add to it with parts from midwayusa.com or brownells.com. You can do almost all the work on it yourself, too. I have had three or four over the years in various states of customization. Never had a bad one.

The basic Ruger .22 Auto is good. Also, the Chinese made copy of the Browning .22 breakdown automatic rifle is good.

Both should be available at gun stores or sporting goods stores for under $200.00

If you want a semi auto 22 get the Ruger10/22, if you want a bolt action 22, get a Savage mark 2 with wood stock, not the plastic. If you want a lever action 22, get a Henry.

Ruger 10/22 is a great gun and easy to change parts on if you want to upgrade it.
I took a $200 stainless one and added:
Volquartzen trigger group with 2 pound pull
Fluted bull barrel
6-24X50 target scope
McMillan Intimadator stock

there are many options for that take your time and look at every gun in your area i do it all the time you'll find a good gun bolt actions are more accurate and semi autos just all around fun i like bolt actions for beginners it slows them down so they learn to aim instead of spraying bullets
