All our dogs we have ever had have eaten Eukanuba. The vet likes that my dog is on this food, and they feed it to their three dogs.

Labs normally shed a lot, so there may not be anything wrong. If there is a skin allergy, you can try a single source protein/single source carbohydrate diet such as Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, which you can get at Petco.
If a dog has a food allergy it is often very difficult to tell which ingredient -out of the dozens of ingredients in dog food- is the cause. A single source diet such as mentioned above is made from ingredients that are not found in regular dog food, so the dog has never eaten it before and would be less likely to have an allergy to it.

I don't know if you have a Walmart or Sam's Club nearby but try the Ole Roy (red bag). We have two pomeranians and a labrador. We've fed them Ole Roy as long as we've had them. No problems with shedding or hot spots. It's also easy on the digestive system. The pomeranians tend to get sick and throw up if we feed them any other brand.
If you can't find Ole Roy try regular Purina or another brand that's lower in protein. Labs tend to shed a lot anyway. Is the shedding in spots? (Hot spots) If so you might want to check with a vet to see what he'd recommend.
Brush your dog daily if you can. It will help with the shedding. Our lab has just now stopped shedding so much.

To tell you the truth, I really don't think the food has anything to do with shedding. I have 3 labs and they shed like crazy. And we buy Nutro max (weight control) dog food, and it is a little pricey. But well worth it. I'm not a fan of Purina as well, too fatty if you ask me. As far as shedding, Just brush him once a week...Good luck.

I used to have a Black Lab! LOVE the dogs!!
I think it was in Consumer Reports, don't QUOTE me as saying this, but, "Ole Roy" dogfood was voted BEST for dogs, I believe. And you want the BEST for a Lab, because they are REALLY intelligent and a LOT of ENERGY, and REQUIRE a lot of energy to BURN!
So, Ole Roy, or Purina Dog Chow. Purina has a multitude of foods for the different ages.
Warning. If you change the dogfood for your pet, it could give it an upset stomach!

Add a raw egg to the food every day if it is simply a coat problem.
Plus, it's really hot right now, so you can expect him to shed quite a bit. It might be good to take him in for a slight trim.

Wellness dog food is great. The other dog foods like Science Diet, IAMS, Eukanuba have by-products. Science Diet has BHA & BHT which has been proven to be cancerous and toxic to animals.

I feed my dog a brand called Natural Balance. She loves it, and her coat has improved a lot since I put her on it a couple of years ago. It's not super easy to find, but they usually sell it at Petco. It's not horribly expensive, and it's excellent quality. And they're a good, animal friendly company too, if you're concerned about ethics.

Hill's Science Diet is an excellent food, if you can afford it.
I can't, so I give my dog IAM's. That's also a little pricey, but my dog is old, and I need to give her something good, as the cheaper brands were upsetting her stomach.
