It's a whiny yip for a growl. A long, eerie warble is a territorial declaration rather than a growl.

Never been attacked or almost attacked by one -- they seldom attack humans and would only likely do so if starving and had their whole pack with them.

One night I was walking with my boyfriend through a park near his house. It's a very wooded park, with a few trails. It eventually leads up a fairly steep hill where there's an old stone library and a single lamp post. Across from the library is the small suburban street that leads to his house.

It was dusk and getting darker by the moment. We decided it was time to start walking back since there are no lights in the park until you get to the library parking lot, so we headed that way. The paths are mostly overgrown and there were many tall bushes on both sides of us.

As we're walking I heard a rustling sound which made us both stop. It wasn't that of a bird or squirrel which you hear all the time, but rather a thicker sound. We look at eachother and kind of laugh it off, passing it off for a squirrel even though we knew it couldn't be. Our pace quickens without really thinking about it and we're starting up the hill.

Then we hear it again, but as we walk it doesn't stop. Something was literally following us. I, being the animal lover (sometimes to the point of being niave, I know) assume it has to be a person. This makes me panic and I can tell my boyfriend is getting tense too. We walk faster. There's some light now, so we know we're getting close, but don't dare look behind us.

I half wanted to bolt, and would've if I knew for a fact that it was a person. Of course I couldn't be sure, and running suddenly from a following animal isn't a smart idea, so I didn't want to take a chance. We finally make it to the top and put one foot onto the cement of the parking lot when we hear this deafening scream.

I live in the country normally, and have heard it before, just never that close. We look over our shoulders quickly to see the bushes shaking and the screams just keeps going on and on. A rabbit was being torn to pieces in those bushes and we both knew it. We turn towards the street again and walk at a medium pace, but as soon as we reached the road we broke into a run.

What it was for sure I'll never be certain, but I know there's lots of wildlife in the area (a deer was walking down the sidewalk only days before). I believe there was only one, and from the bushes it must have been between my knees and waist in height. My guess would very much be a coyote, although foxes are curious enough that they might follow a human.

We laughed about it earlier, it might've been stalking the rabbit the whole time and we simply got in the way. It was the lack of knowing what it was that was following us that scared me.

my brother got growled at once. I encounter coyotes ALL the time...I am a wildlife biologist and I have several on my study site. They usually run when they see me because these guys are not used to humans since my area is kind of in the middle of nowhere. I have worked on more urban sites where the coyotes were no afraid of me at all and sometimes they would follow me around and bark at me. They would kind of keep tabs on me throughout the day to see what I was up to. A couple times I unknowing would sneak up on them, and really scare them! None of them ever growled at me even though I have been close.
I am actually more afraid when I come across stray dogs on my site, or sometimes packs of stray dogs..much more unpredictable and bold.

Were I used to live it was common to run into them at night (course don't help I went looking for them). They were bad in my area and have had several run in's up close and personal. they growl usually if you get less than 20 ft. tend to attack if there going to in 10 ft. seldom will one try alone even in groups there very skidish to attack adult humans. Course I never made it a habbit to get closer than 20 feet unless I had them pined in or dead

Yeah thats I killed coyotes I don't care to hear from the idiotic animal lovers telling me it was inhumane sense when the hell is a coyote human. Besides I got paid to do it so shshshshshhhh.

Heard one growl? Sure. Movies. But, I can't say that I've ever been attacked, no. I hope that you haven't been attacked either. But, if you have, I suggest that you see your doctor right away. I hope you're okay. I also hope that there are people that's answers are more useful than mine. Heh. God Bless. Good Luck.

I have never heard a coyote growl, howl yes, growl no..attacked by one? never, they are more afraid of you, then you are of them, they run if they see you or smell you, they are quite timid when it comes to humans

I have never heard one growl, but I did have one come onto my front porch one night after a litter of puppies. I chased it off with my gun, but had to spend the night out there to keep it away... very scary night
